AOI Torrance Vacation Class Part 2
Here are a few more pictures from the AOI Torrance vacation class field trips. First, students enjoyed the scenery in Palos Verdes and visited The Whale Museum there. The students were very impressed with the museum.
Their teacher said, “The tour guide was really great. She spent so much time with the students, answering their questions and giving them interesting facts about sea animals and the Palos Verdes area. It was a great opportunity for students to practice their English with a native speaker other than their regular teacher.”
Here’s what some of the exhibits looked like:

We were surprised to learn that it's not real water above those plants. It's just a plastic covering.
Next, the students had a wonderful time exploring Venice Beach. They enjoyed checking out the goods for sale by the local vendors, as well as observing the interesting-looking people that hang out in the area. Here are some vendor tables:

Here's an example of some of things for sale in Venice. We managed to snap a couple pictures even though some of the vendors didn't like it.
We went on a Friday morning, so the boardwalk was pretty quiet. It’s usually much busier on Saturdays and Sundays.
Lastly, everyone really enjoyed checking out all the art for sale on the boardwalk in Venice. “It really adds to the original, local feel,” their teacher explained.
Everyone enjoyed spending two weeks together during the vacation class. Students said, “The group was small so we had a chance to get to know each other. We enjoyed hanging out on the field trips. I would like to attend the next vacation class.”

AOI Vacation Class
AOI took a break from regular classes from June 8 – June 21. During the break, the AOI Torrance campus offered a two-week vacation class. Students in the class learned about prepositions, practiced their pronunciation, and improved their listening skills with fun activities like listening to music and answering questions about the lyrics.
They also went on four field trips. On the first field trip, the students went to Hollywood Boulevard to see the walk of fame and the celebrity hand and footprints at the Chinese Mann’s Theater.
Next, they went to Santa Monica and walked along the beach and the pier. Even though it was a bit cloudy, the students still enjoyed dipping their toes in the water.
They got a taste of the California life, and of course, those interested in shopping made sure to take advantage of all the great shops in the area.
Check out the next entry for pictures from the other two field trips the vacation class students enjoyed: Venice Beach and Palos Verdes.
Bowers Museum field trip
Hello everybody! AOI students went on a field trip to the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The museum is one of the most important in Southern California, with wonderful exhibits on different cultures and California history. For more information, click on the link:
Bowling Field Trip!
AOI students went to the Irvine Lanes bowling alley for a fun field trip in April. They had a great time bowling and eating hot dogs. Irvine Lanes is only 5 minutes from AOI Campus and is right next to Boomers, an arcade and theme park that has miniature golf and laser tag. AOI has a field trip every month for students and teachers to attend.
October Events~
Hope you all are having a good first couple weeks of the quarter! This month will have a fun field trip to the Pumpkin Patch. Two weeks from now on the 22nd of October we will go look at all the pumpkins on display! Traditionally people buy pumpkins and carve funny or scary faces on them. The pumpkins are hollowed out and a candle is placed inside so it would glow orange at night. These are called Jack-O-Lanterns.
Another Halloween custom regarding pumpkins is cooking the seeds in different seasonings, sweet or savory, then munching on them as a snack. Oven-bake them or saute them in a frying pan and they will make a delicious bite to eat. It makes a good appetizer for any Halloween party and you can look up many recipes online!
Friday the 29th of October AOI College of Languages is throwing a Faculty and Student Halloween Party!! The staff will be dressed up in Halloween Costumes! You don’t want to miss it! Find a funky costume and come party at AOI with your teachers and friends.
Sincerely,
Sara
